Europa League qualification: How Chelsea and Man Utd Can qualify for Europe on Premier League final day

The Champions League spots are all sorted out, but there’s still a big scramble for the Europa League and Conference League places happening as we head into the final day of the Premier League season this Sunday.

Tottenham’s recent loss to Manchester City means they won’t be in the Champions League next season, and the top four spots are locked in with City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa all set for Europe’s top club competition.

But below them, there’s still a fight for three European spots. Alongside the four guaranteed Champions League spots, the fifth-placed team and the FA Cup winners get into the Europa League group stage, while the Carabao Cup winners enter the Conference League play-off round.

Since Liverpool won the Carabao Cup, if Manchester City win the FA Cup, the teams in fifth and sixth place will both get into the Europa League, and the seventh-placed team will go to the Conference League. If Manchester United win the FA Cup, they’ll get into the Europa League, fifth place will join them, and sixth place will head to the Conference League.

Right now, only six points separate the teams from fifth to eighth, so it’s all to play for this Sunday. Let’s see how each team can secure their place in Europe next year.

  1. Tottenham – They’ve had a rough time lately and have pretty much given up on the Champions League. They just need a draw against Sheffield United to secure fifth place. Even if they lose, they’ll still likely end up in the Europa League, unless a bunch of other stuff happens.
  2. Chelsea – They’ve been on fire lately and are aiming for sixth place. If they win or draw against Bournemouth, they’re in. If they lose and Newcastle win, things get tricky, but they could still make it to the Europa League if Manchester City win the FA Cup.
  3. Newcastle – They’ve had a decent comeback and could snatch a European spot if they win and Chelsea lose, or if they finish seventh and Manchester City win the FA Cup. But they’ve got to make sure they outperform Manchester United on the final day.
  4. Manchester United – They’re in a tough spot and need a win against Brighton. If they finish seventh, they’re in the Conference League unless they win the FA Cup, which is their best shot at making it into Europe.
