Sam Kerr to Miss Olympics Due to Injury

Chelsea’s star striker Sam Kerr will not be competing for Australia in the upcoming Paris Olympics this summer.

Kerr tore her ACL during a Chelsea training camp in January and has not yet returned to training. Although she hoped to recover in time, it’s now official that she won’t be able to play in the Olympics in July.

Australia announced their squad for pre-Olympic friendlies on Tuesday, confirming that Kerr won’t be back in time for Paris.

“Amy Sayer (ACL) and Sam Kerr (ACL) are both out with long-term injuries,” said the Australian FA. “They will continue their rehab with their club teams and won’t be available for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

Kerr is one of several top players to suffer ACL injuries, including England’s captain Leah Williamson.

Kerr also struggled with injuries before last year’s World Cup in Australia, missing the start of the tournament due to a calf injury. Unfortunately, her bad luck continues with this knee injury now ruling her out of the Olympics.

In addition, West Ham midfielder Katrina Gorry will miss the pre-Olympic friendlies due to an ankle injury. Gorry was a standout player during Australia’s run to the World Cup semi-finals last year, which led to her joining the Women’s Super League.
