Maresca Reveals Chelsea’s Goalkeeper Strategy After Jorgensen’s Impressive Debut

Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, has made it clear that he’ll be rotating his goalkeepers, Filip Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez, throughout the season.

In their opening Premier League game against Manchester City, Sanchez was the man between the sticks. However, for Thursday’s Europa Conference League play-off against Servette, Maresca decided to give Jorgensen a shot.

When asked if this was part of a bigger plan, with Sanchez handling Premier League matches and Jorgensen covering domestic cup and European games, Maresca said, “That’s the plan for now, but it could change. I judge players based on their performance.”

He emphasized that if both keepers maintain their level of play, Sanchez will likely continue in the Premier League, while Jorgensen takes the reins in cup and European matches. However, Maresca was clear that everything depends on how well they perform.

Jorgensen, who impressed with a clean sheet in his Chelsea debut, could potentially replace Sanchez if he continues to perform well. Maresca stressed that this approach applies to the entire squad.

“I know it might be hard to believe, but I choose the starting XI based on how players work every day,” Maresca explained. “If someone slacks off in training, they won’t play, whether it’s in the Premier League or any other competition.”

He added, “At Chelsea, hard work is non-negotiable. You must give your all to earn your spot. If anyone thinks they’ll get a chance without putting in the effort, they need to think again.”
