Chris Sutton criticizes Chelsea as Jorginho moves to Arsenal

Jorginho joined Arsenal on the deadline-day

Chris Sutton claims he was “surprised” Chelsea opted to sell Jorginho on the final day of the transfer window in order to “assist” Premier League leaders and London rivals Arsenal.

Jorginho moved from Chelsea to north London for £12 million just before the January transfer window closed.

The Italian midfielder played more than 200 games and won the Champions League and Europa League during his five years at Stamford Bridge.

Jorginho was eager to leave Chelsea because his contract expired in the summer, but Sutton was shocked when the Blues approved his transfer to Arsenal.

The Gunners are in a good position to win the Premier League after nearly 20 years, since they are now five points ahead of Manchester City, the league’s defending champion, with a game remaining.

After a terrible run, Chelsea is currently in only 10th place, 10 points outside of the Champions League spots, and 21 points behind London rivals Arsenal.

‘I’m surprised he’s gone to Arsenal and Chelsea are helping Arsenal,’ former Premier League striker Sutton told the Daily Mail.

‘I think, from Arsenal’s point of view, he may be the signing which helps him win the Premier League. I think that he’s a really talented player.

‘This looks like a compromise because they’re saying “we’re not going to get Moises Caicedo and we’re not going to get Declan Rice in this window”. At 31 it’s a good piece of business, for £10m or £12m it’s cheap as chips.

‘From Arsenal’s point of view, that’s a 10/10 signing. I really think that’s a no brainer and a smart piece of business.’

‘Jorginho is a midfield player who has intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience,’ Arteta said of his new signing.

‘He has won in his career, but still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club.’

Jorginho, meanwhile, added: ‘It’s an important shirt. It’s an amazing club, a big one, and I’m really excited and happy to be here.

‘I’ll try to just bring positive energy, hard work and my experience to help the team. It’s what I always bring with me.’
