Ian Wright mention missed opportunity by Gabriel Jesus against Man City

Jesus had a quiet evening against his former side

Ian Wright thinks that early in their battle for the Premier League title, Gabriel Jesus and Arsenal wasted their “only chance” to attack Manchester City.

On Wednesday night, City easily defeated the Gunners 4-1, with Kevin de Bruyne scoring after just seven minutes.

Just before halftime, John Stones extended the advantage before Kevin de Bruyne scored again, this time after being again set up by Erling Haaland. Late in the game, Haaland joined the fun by scoring his 49th goal of the year in extra time.

Rob Holding’s late goal gave Arsenal a chance to respond, but they couldn’t really threaten City on the night that their Premier League title hopes fizzled.

Few opportunities were given to the visitors by City, but former Arsenal striker Wright pointed out one instance in the first half when his former team had a chance to tie or win the match.

Jesus was photographed on the left flank rather than making himself accessible inside the box as Arsenal built down the right.

‘What is was, it was the only way you were going to get something off them [City],’ Wright told Match of the Day.

At the Etihad, Arsenal was unable to pressure City.

‘You look where Jesus is [out on the left] and this is the only way Arsenal are going to get any sort of half chance. They did finally break through at one stage and then you look at that [no Arsenal players in the City box].

‘That is where you want your striker because you are not going to get too many opportunities where are you going to be able to break into City and do that. That was five minutes in, you have to take it to put them on the back foot.’

With City having two games remaining, the title battle is now in their hands as Arsenal’s lead at the top of the standings is now just two points.

The Gunners also face a tough test away to Newcastle United next weekend with focus now shifting to that game.

‘I don’t know what is going to be required,’ Arteta said of the title race in his post-match press conference.

‘For sure we have to first lift the players up, because they suffered tonight and it was a difficult one to swallow. We’ll lift them up tomorrow and do everything we’ve done so far so well in the next match to earn the right to win [the next game]. That’s where we have to start right now.’
