Ian Wright names Arsenal’s player of the season after Chelsea were beaten at The Emirates

Martin Odegaard net the ball twice against Chelsea

After being named club captain last summer, the Norwegian playmaker has elevated his performance this year.

Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Chelsea saw Odegaard score twice, bringing his season total to 14, which is a career high.

The 21-year-old Saka has scored 14 goals himself, and the Gunners’ performance without Saliba over the past six weeks has highlighted Saliba’s significance to the team.

Wright, though, thinks that the acquisition of Odegaard—first on loan, then in a permanent deal—was a significant move for Arteta and that the Norwegian is deserving of the title of player of the year.

‘I was delighted [to sign him],’ said Wright.

‘I couldn’t believe we got him on loan in the first place, and when he came back, if we could get him again because of his pedigree, what he’s capable of, his ability.

‘The fact he’s captain now, it’s not like he’s been at the club for many years, but being captain and leading by example, and chipping in with that many goals, he’s been unbelievable.

‘I think he’s been our player of the season, if I’m being totally honest.

‘William Saliba was on that track but obviously being injured, Odegaard’s consistency through the whole season has been absolutely tremendous for us.’

Erling Haaland is the favourite to be named PFA Player of the Year after his scintillating campaign for Manchester City.

But Odegaard could battle his compatriot for the crown, even if City go on to win the Premier League title.
