Gary Lineker never thought Arsenal will topple Man City this season

Mikel Arteta will bring more trophies to Arsenal, but Gary Neville believes they will ‘probably come up a bit short’ this season.

Arsenal manager Arteta has turned the north London club into real Premier League title contenders after leading Arsenal to FA Cup triumph in 2020.

The Gunners, who have three games left in the top division this season but are one point behind leaders Manchester City, still have a chance to win the 2022–23 championship.

Lineker believes more hardware is on the way for Arteta’s team while Arsenal will end their seven-year quest for Champions League participation next season.

After the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday, Lineker predicted that Arsenal would fall short of expectations this year.

‘But they’ve made serious progress in the last couple of years.

‘Arteta has done a brilliant job and his team will be winning trophies in the not-too-distant future.’

Despite Arsenal’s win over Newcastle, former Arsenal defender William Gallas says he still feels “very sad” for his old team since he doesn’t see City losing ground in the title fight.

‘Arsenal have to believe they can still win the title, but it won’t be easy because we know Man City are there and will probably keep that advantage until the end,’ Gallas told Sky Sports.

‘I feel very sad for Arsenal. They were on top, they had the advantage and unfortunately now they are second and they have to wait and see if Man City drop any points.’
