On This Day: 2023- Chelsea sign Malo Gusto

A year ago today, Chelsea made a crucial signing for their future. They secured Malo Gusto from Lyon in the French league for a reported fee of less than £30m, a steal in today’s market.

Gusto agreed to join Chelsea in January, but he stayed with Lyon until the end of the season as part of the deal.

Many doubted the Frenchman’s role at Chelsea over the summer, thinking he would be a benchwarmer. But he proved them wrong. He has played 19 times in all competitions so far, mostly in the league.

Gusto faced some challenges, such as a few minor injuries and a disputed red card against Aston Villa in September.

He also showed his versatility by playing on both flanks. He can share the burden with Reece James on the right and be influential on the left.

He joined Chelsea a year ago and has been with them for half a year, but he fits in like he has been there for ages. He has a chance to lift a trophy at Wembley next month.
