Carabao Cup final: Why Virgil van Dijk goal was disallowed for offside in Chelsea vs Liverpool

Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, thought he scored a goal against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final. But the referees decided it was offside, which caused some controversy.

Van Dijk made a strong shot past Ben Chilwell, believing he had given his team the lead in the tense match at Wembley Stadium. However, after checking with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a long time, they canceled the goal because of a “technical offside.”

Even though Van Dijk himself wasn’t offside, the goal was disallowed because another player, Wataru Endo, was in an offside position during the free kick. Endo blocked Levi Colwill from defending against Van Dijk, which interfered with the game.

In the match, both Colwill and Chilwell were assigned to stop Van Dijk, who had scored in his previous Liverpool game and had three goals this season.

It’s debatable whether Colwill could have stopped Van Dijk from scoring, but because Endo was involved and interfering with play, the goal didn’t count.

Dan Kilpatrick, a reporter for Standard Sport, commented on the incident from Wembley: “This feels like another significant VAR decision that might cause issues in the future. Blocks like this happen frequently in games at this level. Will they all be treated the same way from now on?
