Mauricio Pochettino coy on transfer influence at Chelsea amid Conor Gallagher speculation: ‘I know my place

Mauricio Pochettino didn’t seem eager to talk about whether he should have more say in transfers at Chelsea, especially concerning Conor Gallagher’s future.

When asked if he could decide whether Gallagher stays at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino simply said, “I’m the coach, that’s my role.”

Gallagher’s contract has about 14 months left, and there’s a lot of talk about what will happen next for him. He’s been playing well, scoring four goals in five recent games, including a crucial one against Leeds.

Winning against Leeds took some pressure off Chelsea and Pochettino. Now, they still have a shot at winning the FA Cup, which could lead to them qualifying for the Europa League.

But, when it comes to keeping Gallagher on the team, Pochettino couldn’t give much insight. He said, “I can’t be part of that decision. It’s between the club and Conor.”

When pressed further, Pochettino explained, “I know my role.”

He kept saying “no comment” when asked if he should have a say in this matter or if other big club managers would be left out of such decisions.

Pochettino was asked why he’s not more involved, to which he replied, “Because there’s nothing for me to gain. What would I even say? I’m the head coach. My job is to train the team, make decisions about the lineup, and try to win games.”

He also mentioned having a good relationship with the owners and directors, saying they’re open to suggestions.

Gallagher has been Chelsea’s captain several times this season, but talks about renewing his contract haven’t progressed much.

Regarding Reece James, who’s been out due to injury, Pochettino hopes he’ll return before the season ends, but his main concern is to ensure James feels confident and ready to play again.

Injuries are a big worry for Pochettino, especially with players like Christopher Nkunku breaking down again. With seven players out for their next game against Brentford, Pochettino was asked if he’s been able to field his preferred starting lineup at any point this season.

“In nine months? You know the answer,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Pochettino believes in the squad’s potential, but acknowledges that injuries have affected their performance. He sees it as their responsibility to deal with these challenges, and if anyone’s unhappy, they know the consequences.
