Why Todd Boehly will leave Chelsea chairman role in 2027 and how his successor will be found

Todd Boehly is planning to step down as the boss of Chelsea in 2027, and Clearlake Capital will pick someone else to take his place.

This change is part of a special agreement that says the person in charge of the team should switch every five years. This rule was made when Clearlake bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for a whopping £2.55 billion in 2022.

Right now, Clearlake already owns about 60% of Chelsea and has a big say in how things are run. One of their top guys, Behdad Eghbali, is really involved in the club’s daily operations at Stamford Bridge. But come 2027, they want to bring in someone new to lead the team.

Todd Boehly was also given a temporary job as the head of sports stuff back in the summer when the American group took over Chelsea. But lately, he hasn’t been as involved in the soccer side of things.

People have been talking about some tension between Boehly and Clearlake Capital, but sources close to them say everything’s fine.

The group has even started a company called BlueCo in London. This company is like an umbrella for a bunch of different soccer clubs they want to own. They’ve already bought a French team called Strasbourg, and they’re talking about buying teams in Belgium, Portugal, and Brazil.

As for Chelsea, they’re not doing great under their new owners. They’re currently in 11th place in the Premier League. But they did make it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they’ll be facing Manchester City next month.
