Even though our team isn’t playing in European competitions this season, what happens in those tournaments still matters a lot. Let me break it down for you:
In the Premier League, our chances of playing in Europe next season depend on how well the teams in European competitions do this year. There are 8 teams from our league in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. Right now, the Premier League gets 1 in the Europa Conference League (for the Carabao Cup winners).
Next season, the Champions League will have more spots, which means there’s a chance for an extra team from the Premier League to join. But to get that spot, our league has to perform well in this season’s competitions.
The two best-performing countries in Europe’s competitions this season will get an extra spot for the next season. Right now, teams like Liverpool, West Ham, Arsenal, Manchester City are all out of the competition.
According to ESPN, Germany’s teams are doing better than ours lately, which could affect how many teams from the Premier League get to play in Europe next season.
How does it work exactly? Well, they look at how many points our league earns in total and divide it by 8. Manchester United and Newcastle not doing so well has made people doubt our chances. To secure more spots.
So, how does this affect Chelsea? Even though we’re not doing great in the league right now, if the Premier League gets that extra spot, finishing 8th could still mean we get to play in the Europa Conference League. But if we miss out on the extra spot, we might need to finish 6th or 7th to play in Europe next season. And if a team outside the top 8 wins the FA Cup, that could change things too.
Right now, Chelsea is just three point away from 8th place and has some games in hand. We still have tough matches against teams like West Ham, Brighton, Aston Villa, and Tottenham, who are also aiming for European places. So, there’s everything to play for.
