Mauricio Pochettino calls on Chelsea owners to make ruthless decisions

Mauricio Pochettino is telling the big bosses at Chelsea that they need to make some tough choices this summer.

Chelsea had a really bad game on Tuesday. They lost 5-0 to Arsenal, which is the worst defeat they’ve ever had against them.

Now, everyone is looking closely at Pochettino, wondering what’s going to happen next. He’s going to have a chat with the Chelsea higher-ups after the season ends because nobody’s sure if he’ll stick around.

Pochettino said the players basically gave up against Arsenal. He called them “soft,” but he also said it’s not all their fault. He thinks there are bigger problems.

He thinks it’s normal for a young team like Chelsea to have ups and downs. But he’s saying the club needs to be smarter about how they do things to avoid more nights like the Arsenal game.

Even though Chelsea has spent a crazy amount of money on players since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in 2022, things haven’t been going well lately. They’re stuck in ninth place in the Premier League.

Pochettino doesn’t paint a pretty picture of what’s going on at Chelsea. He says they need to be really sharp when they sit down to make decisions at the end of the season.

He said: “We knew there would be challenges when we got here. Now, we have to face them and try to stay positive. If we want to improve, we have to be smart about the way we look at things, our plan for the future.”

“We need a better strategy, and when we’re deciding what to do next, we have to be very careful. We can’t keep ending up in situations like this.”

He’s not blaming the players. He thinks there are bigger things at play here. He says it’s not fair to point fingers at the young guys.

“After going through some tough times, you have to come back and fight against a team like Arsenal, who are aiming to win the Premier League. That’s why we have to be cautious. We can’t be too hard on our players. We’re obviously disappointed with how they played, but I’m not going to say things that aren’t fair.”

Pochettino’s contract at Chelsea will be up next summer, and there might not be a lot of money to spend on new players. Chelsea’s latest financial reports show they’re cutting it close with the Premier League’s rules on making a profit, but they say they’ll follow the rules.
