Arsenal have a minimum recent win record with Manchester City

In a crucial matchup for the Premier League championship tonight (April 26), Arsenal travels to the Etihad to face Manchester City.

At the beginning of the month, the Gunners led City by eight points, but after three straight draws against Liverpool, West Ham, and Southampton, they are now only five points ahead with two games remaining to play.

Although the form comparison between the two teams paints a dismal picture for Mikel Arteta’s team, Arsenal will probably need to win in Manchester to retake the lead in this epic title fight.

Sergio Aguero gave City the lead in the second half of the match in April 2017, but Nacho Monreal equalized ten minutes later.

Arsene Wenger’s team beat Chelsea in the final to win a record-tying 13th championship after Alexis Sanchez scored with the game in extra time.

Since then, City has dominated the rivalry, winning the last 15 consecutive meetings between the two teams.

Arsenal’s most recent Premier League victory over Manchester City came in a 2-1 triumph at the Emirates in December 2015, when the north Londoners were competing with Leicester for the league’s top spot.

After City had dominated early possession, Theo Walcott gave the home team the lead just after the half hour mark. Olivier Giroud then added a second goal in stoppage time of the first half after Eliaquim Mangala made a terrible clearance.

For Manuel Pellegrini’s team, Yaya Toure scored a consolation goal, but both Toure and substitute Wilfried Bony missed late opportunities to equalize the score.

In the Premier League, Arsenal’s most recent victory against City was a 2-0 victory in January 2015.

Additionally, 83 of the 175 league games have been won by the Gunners, compared to 50 by City.

Arteta, who served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant coach at Manchester City from 2016 to 2019, has lost all nine of his meetings with the current manager, scoring four goals while giving up 22.

Both encounters between the two teams this season have been won by Manchester City; the first was a 1-0 home victory in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January, while the second was a 3-1 away victory in the Premier League in February.
