Brighton has confirmed that Sam Jewell, their head of recruitment, has agreed to join Chelsea.

Sam Jewell, who is 34 years old and the son of former Wigan and Derby manager Paul Jewell, has decided to leave his position on the south coast and will now work at Stamford Bridge, following in the footsteps of his predecessor Paul Winstanley.

There were talks about Sam Jewell potentially moving to Manchester United as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s plans to change things up at Old Trafford. However, Chelsea will be the ones to welcome him, although he will first take a period of gardening leave before officially starting his new role.

He will be reporting to co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, operating under the multi-club model. It’s worth noting that Chelsea’s owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, also have a majority stake in the French club Strasbourg.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi had glowing words for Jewell in an interview with The Athletic in December, describing him as a top guy and praising his work during the last transfer window.

Brighton released a statement expressing gratitude for Jewell’s service and announced that Mike Cave, the assistant technical director, supported by George Holmes, the scouting and intelligence manager, will take over Jewell’s responsibilities with immediate effect.
