Chelsea record £90.1m loss in first full year under BlueCo ownership

Chelsea lost a lot of money, £90.1 million, in the first year since they got new owners.

But it’s not all bad news. Compared to the year before, when they lost £121.4 million, it’s an improvement. Back then, they had some trouble because of government penalties against their old owner, Roman Abramovich. But still, Chelsea’s money situation isn’t great, and they might break some financial rules in the Premier League.

On the bright side, Chelsea made more money overall, reaching £512.5 million, up from £481.3 million the year before. This happened mostly because they sold some players, like Kai Havertz for £75 million to Arsenal. Also, they made more money from matches and sponsorships, and their women’s team did well.

But they earned less from broadcasting, down by £9.1 million to £225.9 million, since they didn’t make it to any European competitions last season.

The news comes from BlueCo 22, the company that Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea and the French team Strasbourg with. They reported a loss of £653 million from March 2, 2022, when they started, to June 30, 2023.

Chelsea might have to sell some players before June 30 to follow the Premier League’s financial rules. They’re not likely to make it to Europe next season unless they win the FA Cup. Conor Gallagher, a player from their academy, is the one most talked about leaving.
