Chelsea Hires Brentford’s Tactical Statistician to Lead New Set-Piece Department

Brentford has announced that their tactical statistician, Bernardo Cueva, will be leaving the club to join Chelsea. Chelsea has recruited Cueva to head up a new set-piece department.

This move is part of Chelsea’s broader strategy to strengthen their backroom staff, which also includes new hires like Brighton’s head of recruitment Sam Jewell, Swansea’s head of football operations Josh Marsh, and former FA culture consultant Owen Eastwood.

Chelsea’s coach, Mauricio Pochettino, explained how Cueva’s arrival will impact the team’s set-piece strategies: “We have an excellent analysis and set-piece team, including two set-piece coaches. The club aims to enhance this area by creating a dedicated set-piece department to support and improve our current setup. Just like we’ve reinforced our medical staff and created a specialized goalkeeper department with Ben Roberts, we want to bolster our set-piece strategies. We welcome anyone who can bring additional expertise to help us improve.”

Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles, confirmed Cueva’s departure, saying, “Bernardo has done a fantastic job over the past four seasons, contributing significantly to our promotion to the Premier League and helping us maintain our place for four consecutive seasons. His expertise in set-piece strategies has been a key part of our success. We wish him all the best at Chelsea.”
