Chelsea’s Pochettino on Nkunku’s Status for Final Game: Caution is Key

Chelsea’s manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has confirmed that while French striker Christopher Nkunku is fit, the team won’t rush him back into the starting lineup for their final game against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Nkunku, who has battled knee and hamstring injuries all season, made a strong return by scoring the winning goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Brighton on Wednesday. Despite his impressive performance, Pochettino emphasized the need to manage Nkunku’s return carefully.

The 26-year-old, signed for £52 million from RB Leipzig, has had a challenging first season at Stamford Bridge, with injuries limiting him to just three goals in 13 appearances.

Given his recent return to fitness, Nkunku might not start on Sunday as Chelsea focuses on preparing him for the next season.

“He played more than we expected against Brighton because Mykhailo Mudryk got injured,” Pochettino said on Friday. “We will assess him tomorrow and make the best decision for him and the team. We don’t want to take any risks because we want him to finish the season feeling good and ready for a strong pre-season.”

Chelsea fans will likely see Nkunku as a substitute rather than in the starting lineup, as the team prioritizes his long-term health and readiness for next season.
