Chelsea has made its first signing under new manager Sonia Bompastor, bringing in 20-year-old Julia Bartel from Barcelona on a free transfer.

Bartel, who signed a contract until the summer of 2027 with an option for an additional year, is a promising talent from Barcelona’s academy. She made her senior debut at 17 in 2021 and is currently a Spain Under-23 international.

Bartel expressed her excitement about joining Chelsea, saying, “I am very happy to be here at Chelsea. It’s one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and I am very excited to be part of this club.”

Chelsea’s general manager, Paul Green, praised Bartel’s abilities and potential: “Julia is a top young player, who is technically excellent and has good pedigree coming through at Barcelona and the Spanish international youth teams. She has good leadership skills for someone at a young age and we look forward to seeing her develop in the upcoming years.”

Bartel has an impressive track record, having been named in the team of the tournament when she helped Spain win the Under-20 World Cup in 2022. She also played a key role in Spain’s Under-19 European Championship victory last summer, participating in every game.
