Emma Hayes labels Chelsea’s WSL title bid ‘done’ as trophyless farewell looms

Emma Hayes from Chelsea’s Women’s team admitted that their chances of winning the league are pretty much over. They lost 4-3 against Liverpool in a big game, which puts them six points behind Manchester City, who are leading the league. And to make matters worse, Chelsea’s goal difference is eight goals lower than City’s.

Now, Chelsea’s hopes hinge on Arsenal beating Manchester City in their upcoming match. If Arsenal can pull off a win, it might give Chelsea a chance, but it’s a long shot.

After getting knocked out of the Women’s Champions League by Barcelona recently, it seems like this season might not end with any trophies for Hayes, who’s leaving Chelsea soon to coach the US women’s national team.

“I think the title is pretty much out of reach,” said Hayes. “Technically, we still have a chance, but realistically, it’s not looking good. Our focus now is to finish the season strong, even though it’s going to be tough.”

Chelsea has been dominating the Women’s Super League for the past four years, but their recent performance has been disappointing. Hayes was particularly upset about how they let in four goals in the second half against Liverpool.

“We’ve never let in that many goals in a single half before, especially three from set-pieces. It’s unacceptable,” she said. “But credit to Liverpool, they played well and capitalized on our mistakes.”

Chelsea had high hopes for this season, aiming for a quadruple, but it’s been a rough ride. They lost in the League Cup Final to Arsenal, got knocked out in the FA Cup semi-finals, and now this defeat against Liverpool.

Hayes, who’s won 13 major trophies during her time at Chelsea, reflected on her memories with the club. “We’ve achieved a lot together, but unfortunately, winning more titles this year seems unlikely,” she said. “My focus now is to prepare the team for the remaining games and finish the season on a positive note.”

Despite the setbacks, Hayes emphasized that Chelsea won’t give up easily. “We’ll keep fighting till the end, but realistically, the title is slipping away from us. Manchester City deserves it, they’ve been consistent throughout the season,” she concluded.
