Chelsea is on the verge of naming Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. The club’s leaders are eager to finalize a deal quickly for the Leicester manager.

After Leicester allowed Chelsea to talk to Maresca, the 44-year-old Italian became their top choice to take over from Mauricio Pochettino.

Top Chelsea executives will meet with Maresca in Marbella, where he’s vacationing, to continue negotiations with Leicester about a £10 million compensation.

Maresca led Leicester to win the Championship this season. Chelsea’s co-owners have been advised by their sporting directors to consider him the best choice for the job.

Joe Shields, Chelsea’s recruitment director, has worked with Maresca before and speaks highly of him.

If all goes well, Maresca might sign a deal soon, especially since Kieran McKenna is no longer in contention, and Maresca was preferred over Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank.

Chelsea plans to offer Maresca a five-year contract with smart exit options.

Maresca is expected to bring some of his Leicester team to Stamford Bridge, including former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who’s been assisting Maresca at Leicester.

Although Maresca has only been a head coach for one season, he’s stood out to Chelsea for various reasons.

Pochettino left Chelsea after disagreements about his role, while Maresca is interested in the head-coach position that Chelsea wants to maintain.

Maresca’s tactical skills and his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City made him an attractive candidate for Chelsea.

He’s known for preferring a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, which Chelsea believes fits their team well.

Maresca has impressed Chelsea with his plans to maximize the potential of their players, including helping World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez excel after his recovery from surgery.

Fernandez, despite his talent, has struggled to find his place at Chelsea, but Maresca has proposed several changes to help Fernandez succeed.

While Chelsea had discussions with Ipswich’s McKenna, he’s likely to stay with his club, which he’s just led to the Premier League.
