How do Chelsea get on in the League Cup semi-finals?

The Carabao Cup will change its format after this season. The EFL have announced that the 23/24 Carabao Cup will be the last one to have two-legged semi-finals, due to the busy schedule of the players.

Chelsea have had mixed results in the last five seasons when playing over two legs in the League Cup. Their most recent success was in 2022, when they beat Tottenham 3-0 on aggregate. Here are their last five League Cup matches.

21/22: Chelsea 3-0 Tottenham

Chelsea faced their London rivals, Tottenham, twice in a week in 2022. The first leg was a 2-0 win for the blues at Stamford Bridge. The second leg was a 1-0 victory for Chelsea, with Kepa’s offside trap being the highlight of the game.

18/19: Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham (4-2 on pens)

Chelsea and Tottenham met again in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup in 2019. The first leg was at Wembley Stadium, where Tottenham won 1-0. The second leg was a memorable game at Stamford Bridge, where Kante and Hazard scored to cancel out Tottenham’s advantage, but the visitors equalised in the second half, forcing a penalty shootout.

17/18: Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal

Chelsea failed to reach the final of the Carabao Cup in 2018, losing to Arsenal over two legs. The first leg was a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge, giving Arsenal the edge for the second leg. Chelsea took the lead at the Emirates, but Rudiger scored an own goal five minutes later. Xhaka scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute, sending Arsenal to the final against Manchester City.

14/15: Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool

This was one of my favourite games at Stamford Bridge in a long time. Chelsea and Liverpool played a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the first leg, giving Chelsea the advantage for the second leg. The game was tied after 90 minutes, so extra time was needed. Ivanović scored the winner in the 94th minute, as Chelsea defended well. The game was also known for Diego Costa’s provocation of the Liverpool players. Chelsea went on to win the final against Tottenham, which was their last League Cup trophy to date.

12/13: Chelsea 0-2 Swansea

This game is notorious for Eden Hazard’s incident with the Swansea ball boy in the 2nd leg, which is still shown to this day. The tie was already lost before the 2nd leg, as Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat at home, which made it very difficult for them in Swansea.

Out of the last five times Chelsea reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, they advanced in three of them, one of them by penalties.
