“It didn’t feel real” – Levi Colwill relives the moment he took the armband for the first time

Chelsea has faced many challenges in the leadership department for the last half-year. Reece James, who was appointed as the club captain at the beginning of the season, and Chilwell, his deputy, both got injured. Conor Gallagher took over the captaincy role, but he was suspended after getting a red card in the 3-2 win over Brighton. This gave Levi Colwill the opportunity to wear the armband in the Man Utd game.

Colwill shared his feelings about that special moment in an interview on the club’s website. He said:

“Reece told me in the dressing room and I was very grateful. I thought he was joking at first but then he pointed to the armband on my shirt. I was in disbelief and it was probably better that way. If I’d had time to think about it, I might’ve been nervous.”

Colwill said the experience helped him grow as a leader. He added:

“I did the team talk and I was a bit shaky at the beginning, I wasn’t making eye contact, but then I got into it and I think it was good. I joke with the boys that I’m one of the best at team talks now, maybe second only to Reece.”

Colwill has the potential to be a future captain for the club and his leadership qualities can benefit Chelsea’s inexperienced squad, which has been widely criticized in the football world.
