Pochettino Wants Clarity on Chelsea’s Future Plans

Mauricio Pochettino is looking for assurances about Chelsea’s plans for next season during upcoming talks with the club’s leadership. Despite a strong finish to the season, his future at Stamford Bridge is still uncertain.

Chelsea has been exploring potential replacements, such as Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, due to the uncertainty surrounding Pochettino’s position.

This week, Pochettino is scheduled to meet with Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, along with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, to review the past season.

The club’s owners are eager to restore Chelsea to the top of English and European football quickly and want a team that reflects their significant investment in the squad.

While much of the discussion will focus on Chelsea evaluating Pochettino, the 52-year-old coach will also use this opportunity to assess his employers.

If Pochettino leaves Chelsea this summer, he will likely be in high demand, with several elite clubs in England and Europe looking for new managers or considering changes. He was a finalist for the Manchester United job in 2022 and remains highly regarded by the new United ownership, making him a potential candidate if Erik ten Hag’s position becomes uncertain.

Chelsea plans to continue supporting their sporting directors in leading the club’s recruitment and transfer strategy. They’ve already made moves this summer, including a £29.5 million deal for Brazilian teen talent Estevao Willian.

Pochettino wants to know more about Chelsea’s transfer plans, especially if the club intends to sell homegrown players like Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea’s new organizational structure is still being established, with ongoing additions to their staff and clear delineation of responsibilities. Pochettino is keen to see how this will all come together in practice.

After guiding Chelsea to just one defeat in their last 15 Premier League matches, leading to a sixth-place finish from an 11th-place position in April, Pochettino is expected to express his confidence to the board. He believes he can deliver an even better second season, as he has done in all his previous managerial roles.
