According to Pochettino, Messi needs to win the World Cup to be recognized as an all-time great with Maradona and Pele.

The former manager of Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain is eager to see his native country win the Qatar Cup, and Messi will be essential to their prospects. He thinks that Messi needs to win the World Cup to establish his greatness with Brazilian legend Pele and Argentine hero Diego Maradona.

When asked if Messi’s status as one of the greatest players in football history will be affected by winning the World Cup, Pochettino responded, “Yes, it counts, because the World Cup is different. You need to prove yourself with the trophy, which is football’s ultimate expression, just like Maradona or Pele did. He is the best in the world, you think as you lift the prize. The World Cup trophy is the one item Messi is still missing, and I hope it will be presented in Qatar. I am an Argentine, so it goes without saying that I want Argentina to win the World Cup. And to show that Messi is among the best, ranking right up there with Maradona and Pele.
