Netherlands Euro 2024 Selection: Chelsea Talent Called Up, Jurrien Timber Dropped

Ian Maatsen is going to play alongside Micky van de Ven and Virgil van Dijk in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s defender, Jurrien Timber, won’t be in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024. He’s 22 and has played 15 times for the Oranje team, but he’s been left out because he was injured for most of the season. He hurt his knee really badly on the first weekend of the Premier League, so he’s been out for months. He’s hoping to get back on the bench for Arsenal’s last game against Everton on Sunday.
The Netherlands have until June 7 to pick their final team for the tournament in Germany this summer. They decided not to risk picking Timber because of his injury, but they did pick Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, even though he was out for a month with an ankle problem.
Because Timber is out, it’s a chance for Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, who’s currently playing for Borussia Dortmund on loan, to join the squad. He hasn’t played for the national team yet, but he’s been in training camps before. He’s hoping to play in the friendly match against Canada before they decide on the final team. The Dutch team also has a match against Iceland before they start the Euros against Poland on June 16.
There are quite a few players from the Premier League in the 30-player list, including Mark Flekken, Micky van de Ven, Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Cody Gakpo, Bart Verbruggen, and Ryan Gravenberch. Jurrien Timber’s brother, Quinten, who plays for Feyenoord, is also in the mix.
Some surprising things in the list are that Bologna’s striker Joshua Zirkzee isn’t in the squad, and Jorrel Hato, who’s a promising young defender from Ajax, also misses out.
