No VAR for Carabao Cup Semi-Final – EFL Statement

The Carabao Cup begins on Tuesday night as Chelsea make their way to the North-East to face Middlesbrough.

A major change is the absence of VAR for the match. The tournament was supposed to have VAR from the semi-final stage onwards, but the EFL issued this statement;

“Since one of the semi-finalist clubs does not have the system installed and to ensure fairness and consistency, VAR technology will not be applied in the Carabao Cup semi-final stage this season.

This follows the previous rounds of this season’s competition where VAR was only available at some venues, but not all. VAR is set up at Wembley Stadium and as we previously promised VAR will be used in February’s final.”

The game will be officiated by Sam Barrott.
