A decade ago, Chelsea let go of one of their best players ever. On this day in 2014, they confirmed the transfer of Kevin De Bruyne to Wolfsburg in Germany.

The club announced on their website (which has since been taken down – according to The Guardian), “Kevin De Bruyne has today completed a move to Wolfsburg. The Belgian joins the Bundesliga club having made five starts for Chelsea, with a further four appearances as a substitute.”

That was the end of De Bruyne’s Chelsea career, until he came back as a Manchester City star. He has tormented his former team many times, but could not win the 2021 Champions League against them.

Mourinho talked about De Bruyne’s exit on the Obi One podcast; “When you are at Chelsea and you want to leave, go and another one comes. They were just kids who couldn’t wait, and their careers say they were right, but it wasn’t down to me.”

De Bruyne has netted 97 goals in 360 games for Manchester City.
