Player ratings: Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa (FA Cup R4)

Despite some positive aspects, the game ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw on Friday night, which means a rematch in about 10 days. Chelsea wasted many opportunities, dominated for a while, and then lost control of the game.

These are my ratings for Chelsea’s players after the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

Petrovic: 9/10– He made some crucial saves, especially when Chelsea were under pressure in both halves. He was alert and reliable, unlike the attackers who were often dormant. Gilchrist: 7/10- He performed well, considering he replaced the injured Levi Colwill who got hurt in the warm-up. He defended solidly for the 65 minutes he played.

Disasi: 7.5/10- He showed confidence and composure, after being criticized in recent weeks.

Thiago Silva: 7/10- He did a good job and was strong in defence. He cleared many balls and was good in the air. He had some shaky moments, but that could be due to the short time between games. He got a silly yellow card at the start and was out of position at the end, forcing Petrovic to make a brilliant save.

Badiashile: 7/10- He made one error, but otherwise he was comfortable at left back. He helped the team control his flank, until he moved to centre back and the team lost balance.

Caicedo- 7/10- He had a tough game and has played better before. He lost many duels in the midfield and was sometimes hesitant to shoot when he had a chance. He can switch from defence to attack quickly under pressure.

Enzo: 7/10- He was tired at the end of the game as Villa increased their intensity. He was similar to Caicedo, losing many duels and being overrun at times, especially in the second half. He was still important for the team’s progress.

Gallagher: 6.5/10- He was unlucky not to get an assist with a good cutback, but he didn’t do much else in attack. He lost the ball too often, won less than a third of his duels, and was easily bypassed.

Madueke: 7/10- He impressed me with his performance, except for the miss in the first half. He was not afraid to take on defenders and drive forward. His final ball was not great, but his build up was good. He also tracked back defensively a lot.

Palmer: 6.5/10– He missed two big chances, which was frustrating because against a team like Aston Villa, you have to take those chances. He was probably playing out of position because of Chelsea’s striker crisis, so his creativity was not fully utilized.

Sterling: 7/10- He had an average performance. He supported Badiashile defensively a lot. He was isolated at times, but he was dangerous with the ball. He just couldn’t beat a defender in a one-on-one situation as much as we needed. He drove into dead ends, unlike Madueke who could create space for himself.

Subs: Chilwell- 5/10, Mudryk- 5/10, Broja- N/A, Carney- N/A
