Chelsea Manager Pochettino Likely to Stay: Key Talks Ahead

Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s manager, seems increasingly likely to stay on after receiving support from club co-owner Todd Boehly ahead of crucial talks next week.

Boehly praised Chelsea’s recent form, saying, “anything good takes time.” This comes as Chelsea has climbed to fourth in the Premier League form table since January. They could secure their fifth consecutive win under the new ownership in the upcoming season finale against Bournemouth.

Chelsea’s directors are largely supportive of Pochettino staying for the next season. However, the Argentine coach will meet with Chelsea’s sporting directors and co-owner Behdad Eghbali next week for important discussions.

Pochettino, usually reserved about his feelings, expressed a new sense of satisfaction at Chelsea. “It’s always important to have the backing of the owners. They are the bosses, and it’s best for the club, the players, and the fans,” Pochettino said. “Coaches are judged on results, often in a short period, so it’s crucial to feel that support.”

Even though his future isn’t guaranteed, Pochettino has already started planning for next season. Chelsea has been monitoring Ruben Amorim, Sporting CP’s boss, as a potential future manager since buying the club in 2022. But Pochettino seems to be gaining favor by significantly improving Chelsea’s performance in 2024.

Regarding the summer plans, Pochettino said, “That’s a discussion with the sporting directors and the owner. We’re working on the summer strategy, pre-season, and preparing for the new season.”

After a win against Brighton, Pochettino clarified his earlier comment that this Chelsea squad “is not my team.” He meant it in terms of respect and prioritizing the club over himself. He admitted even his wife was confused by some of his past statements. “I need to blame myself; sometimes I don’t even understand what I meant. But the club and the badge are the most important,” he explained.

Pochettino, who often appeared unsettled at Stamford Bridge, now seems more at ease. “I am happy with how the team has evolved. If we had started this way, we’d be in the top four,” he said. “But we want to improve further. I’m proud of the players and the coaching staff for pushing hard through challenges.”

Despite some skepticism from fans due to his Tottenham background, Pochettino is fully committed to revitalizing Chelsea. In April, Chelsea was 11th in the Premier League, but they have climbed to sixth with six wins, two draws, and one defeat since then. This improvement could secure a Europa League spot and possibly ensure Pochettino stays for another season.

“My message to the supporters is to trust the process and the team. We are 200 percent committed to the club,” he said. “It’s a shame the season is ending now; with more time, we could have reached the top positions. But finishing strong gives us hope for a solid start next season.”
