Ref Watch: Carabao Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg

The blues will try to overcome a 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough, a Championship team, in the Carabao Cup 2nd leg on Tuesday night.

A major change is the absence of VAR for the game. The EFL announced that VAR was supposed to be used in the semi-final stage, but they issued this statement;

“Since one of the semi-finalist clubs does not have the system installed and to ensure fairness and consistency, VAR technology will not be used in the Carabao Cup semi-final stage this season.

This follows the previous rounds of this season’s competition when VAR was available at some, but not all, grounds. VAR is installed at Wembley Stadium and as we previously promised VAR will be used in February’s final.”

Even though both venues have VAR for the 2nd leg, it cannot be used on Tuesday because it was not available in the first leg.

The match referee is John Brooks.

John Brooks has officiated one Chelsea game this season, which was the 3-1 defeat to West Ham. — A bad sign.

This was also the last game where Carney Chukwuemeka played. Pochettino will probably give an update on his status on Monday.
