The Blues have brought in someone new to help pick players for their team.

Chelsea’s got a fresh face in their recruitment team. Sam Jewell, who used to work at Brighton, has started his job as the director of global recruitment at Chelsea. He’s 34 years old and his dad is Paul Jewell, who used to manage Wigan and Bradford.

Sam’s joined a big team at Cobham just before the transfer window opens this summer. He’s the latest person to make the move from the south coast to west London.

Even though Sam agreed to join Chelsea in February, he had to wait three months before he could start working at Stamford Bridge. His job title makes it sound like he’s going to work with other clubs too, like Strasbourg, which Chelsea’s linked with.

Sam started at Brighton in 2016, working with the Under-21s, then moved up to managing emerging talent in 2019, and finally became head of recruitment in 2022.

He’ll be reporting to Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who are in charge of all things football at Chelsea, including the men’s and women’s teams and the academy. Joe Shields and Josh Marsh are also important in the recruitment team.

Chelsea’s been hiring a lot of people from Brighton lately ever since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over. They got Graham Potter and some coaches from Brighton, as well as players like Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez, spending over £200 million.

Right now, Chelsea’s looking to sign Estevao Willian, a 17-year-old winger from Palmieras, for £52 million. They’re also on the hunt for a striker, left-back, and centre-back for this summer.
