Conor Gallagher Reflects on His Move to Atletico Madrid

After a long summer of transfer rumors, Conor Gallagher has completed his move from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £35.8 million plus add-ons. Despite the change, the England midfielder has no hard feelings toward his former club and is excited about his new chapter in Spain.

Gallagher, who had been a key player for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino last season, was rumored to have a smaller role under new manager Enzo Maresca. However, Gallagher doesn’t agree with that narrative.

“I don’t think that’s true personally,” said the 24-year-old. “Last season I had a good run with Chelsea, and Pochettino trusted me enough to play me regularly. I’m grateful to him for that opportunity, and I’ll always be thankful to the fans for their support.”

Many speculated that Gallagher’s exit was to help Chelsea ease financial pressure, especially since he came through their academy, making the transfer fee pure profit for the club. However, Gallagher insists there are no bad feelings.

“Chelsea is my boyhood club, and I’ll always have great memories from my time there,” Gallagher explained. “Football is unpredictable, and sometimes things change quickly. Atletico Madrid showed strong interest in me, and I felt confident the deal would go through.”

The transfer saga took some unexpected turns, including a delay caused by Samu Omorodion’s failed move to Chelsea from Atletico. While in Madrid, Gallagher admitted the situation felt “strange” at times, but ultimately, he’s happy with the outcome.

“Chelsea made their decisions and brought in some great players. Things worked out differently for me, but in the end, I think it’s a positive result for everyone involved,” he added.

Despite leaving, Chelsea fans still sang Gallagher’s name at Stamford Bridge during their opening game of the Premier League season, a moment that touched him deeply.

“I’ve always felt the love from the Chelsea fans, and I’m really thankful for that,” said Gallagher. “I’ll always have a lot of respect and affection for them.”

Now, Gallagher looks forward to his new journey with Atletico Madrid and working under manager Diego Simeone, eager to make an impact in La Liga.
