Chelsea’s Next Move: Managerial Talks Underway

Chelsea is gearing up for some important end-of-season discussions to decide the future of their current manager, Mauricio Pochettino. Ruben Amorim and Kieran McKenna are potential candidates waiting in the wings if Chelsea decides to make a change.

Pochettino is scheduled to meet with Chelsea’s top brass in the coming days to review the season and discuss his future. Despite having dinner with co-owner Todd Boehly recently, Pochettino admitted that he still doesn’t know if he’ll be staying on as the manager next season.

Since buying the club in 2022, Chelsea’s owners have been keeping an eye on several managers they admire. Recently, they’ve reached out to representatives of Sporting CP’s Amorim and Ipswich manager McKenna.

Amorim has been on Chelsea’s radar for a while. Even when Graham Potter was the manager, Amorim was considered a potential future boss. Liverpool and West Ham also looked into hiring him, but Liverpool decided against it because his preferred back-three formation didn’t fit their style.

McKenna, a former Manchester United assistant, has impressed Chelsea by leading Ipswich to successive promotions, bringing them from League One to the Premier League.

Pochettino, on the other hand, could still stay on for another season. He managed to turn the team’s fortunes around, finishing sixth in the league and securing a spot in European competitions, which will be confirmed as the Europa League if Manchester City wins the FA Cup Final against Manchester United.

Pochettino has emphasized that the upcoming review will be a chance for both him and the club to decide the future together. He has been frustrated by the assumption that only Chelsea would decide his fate.

As Chelsea finished the season strong with five straight Premier League wins, Pochettino seemed more upbeat. After a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, he expressed his happiness at Chelsea and hinted that his recent dinner with Boehly was a positive sign.

The exact date for the end-of-season review hasn’t been set yet, but when it happens, the discussions will be crucial. If Pochettino and the club can agree on their plans for the next season, he might stay on. However, if they can’t find common ground, a change in management could still happen.
